قتل أربعة و 11 جريحا في اليمن

Armed Yemeni soldiers

The Yemeni army has pounded a town in the country's secessionist south with artillery ****ls, killing four people and leaving scores wounded, medics say.

"Four civilians were killed and at least 11 others, among them six women, wounded," a hospital official told AFP.

Yemeni forces targeted Daleh with artillery fire from army positions around the town on Monday, following clashes in the town center between police and armed supporters of the autonomy-seeking Southern Movement.

Eyewitnesses said the army had ****led the town center "indiscriminately."

The attack comes amid a general strike called by the Southern Movement that has completely paralyzed Daleh. The strike has also been observed in other southern towns of Habilayn and Tur al-Baha in Lahij Province, as well as Lawdar, Mudiyah and al-Qaar in Abyan Province.

South Yemen declared independence following the British withdrawal in 1967 until it united with the north in 1990. The south made a failed effort to break away in 1994, sparking a short civil war that ended with the region overrun by northern troops.

Yemen has been the scene of widespread protests in the south, where people accuse Sana'a of discriminating in the alof resources.
