Thousands rally in south Yemen as donors meet

SANAA — Thousands rallied for independence across south Yemen on Saturday as international donors to the war-torn country gathered for talks in Saudi Arabia.
Ali Salem al-Baid, who led the south to unity with the north in 1990, called on Friday for "two days of southern anger" to coincide with the Riyadh meeting, where Yemen's main donors are mulling how to strengthen the Sanaa government and stem the rise of violent extremism in the war-torn country.
Brandishing flags of the former south and of Saudi Arabia, crowds took to the streets of the major towns of the provinces of Dhaleh, Lahij, Abyan and Hadramawt where businesses remained closed for fear of clashes with security forces, witnesses and local officials said.
In Abyan, three civilians suffered bullet wounds when police moved to stop demonstrators cutting the highway between the provincial capital Zinjibar and the south's main city Aden, witnesses said.
Southern Islamist leader Tareq al-Fadhli called on demonstrators in the centre of Zinjibar "to continue your struggle until the south is freed from Yemeni occupation."
Fadhli, a former jihadist who rallied to the southern cause, promised "victory soon" over the Sanaa government of President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
Protestors also demonstrated in the town of Lauder further northeast, witnesses said.
In Dhaleh, thousands gathered in defiance of a curfew which had been imposed overnight. Police stopped only vehicle traffic from circulating, residents said.
In Lahej, thousands demonstrated in the towns of Hutah and Al-Habilain, and rallies were held in Mukallah, the main city of Hadramawt.
In his appeal from exile, the former southern leader had called for mass protests to coincide with the two-day meeting in the Saudi capital Riyadh, which gathers Yemen's wealthy Gulf neighbours and its other major donors.
"I call on you over the next two days to send a message to our Arab brothers and to the representatives of the international community gathered in Riyadh underlining your rejection of the occupation and your commitment to self-determination," Baid said.
"Our only weapon is our determination to recover our rights whatever the cost," he said, adding: "We will succeed in regaining our independence."
Pro-independence demonstrations have multiplied in the south in recent months amid a worsening economic situation and complaints of discrimination in favour of northerners by the Sanaa government.
Western governments have been pushing for a sharp increase in aid to Yemen to help Sanaa tackle multiple sources of dissent.
Zaidi Shiite rebels in the far north waged a seven-year uprising against government troops before a tenuous truce came into force on February 12.
Yemen is also Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden's ancestral homeland and the West fears growing Islamic militancy.

تجمع الآلاف في جنوب اليمن في الوفت الذي تلتقي فيه الجهات المانحة

احتشد الالاف من أجل الاستقلال في جنوب اليمن يوم السبت في الوقت الذي تجمتمع فيه الجهات الدولية المانحة للبلد الذي مزقته الحروب لإجراء محادثات في المملكة العربية السعودية.
علي سالم البيض الذي قاد الجنوب إلى الوحدة مع الشمال في عام 1990 ، دعا يوم الجمعة الى "يومين من الغضب الجنوبي" ليتزامن مع اجتماع الرياض ، واليمن ، حيث المانحون الرئيسيون يتدارسون كيفية تعزيز حكومة صنعاء و التصدي لتصاعد التطرف والعنف في البلد الذي مزقته الحرب.
ملوحة بأعلام الجنوب سابقا والمملكة العربية السعودية نزلت الحشود الى الشوارع في المدن الرئيسية للمحافظات الضالع ، لحج ، أبين وحضرموت حيث الشركات ما زالت مغلقة خوفا من اشتباكات مع قوات الامن ، كما قال شهود عيان ومسؤولون محليون.
و في أبين, أصيب ثلاثة مدنيون بالرصاص عندما تحركت الشرطة لمنع المتظاهرين من قطع الطريق الرئيسي بين العاصمة الاقليمية زنجبار و المدينة الرئيسية في جنوب، عدن ، قال شهود عيان.
الزعيم الاسلامي الجنوبي طارق الفضلي دعا المتظاهرين في وسط مدينة زنجبار "للاستمرار في النضال حتى يتم تحرير الجنوب من الاحتلال اليمني".
و الفضلي من الجهاديين السابقين الذين احتشدوا لقضية الجنوب ، وعد ب "النصر قريب" على حكومةالرئيس علي عبدالله صالح في صنعاء.
و في مدينة لودر في الشمال الشرقي تظاهرمزيدا من المحتجين، كما افاد شهود.
و في الضالع تجمع الآلاف في تحد لحظر التجول الذي فٌرض خلال الليل. الشرطة أوقف فقط حركة مرور السيارات، كما قال سكان.
في لحج ، تظاهر الالاف في مدن الحوطة و الحبيلين ، ونٌظمت مسيرات في المكلا ، المدينة الرئيسية في محافظة حضرموت.
في ندائه من المنفى ، كان الزعيم الجنوبي السابق دعى لتنظيم احتجاجات جماعية جنوب ليتزامن مع الاجتماع الذي يستمر يومين في العاصمة السعودية الرياض ، والذي تجتمع فيه اليمن ودول الخليج الغنية وغيرها من الجهات المانحة الرئيسية.
"ادعو كم على مدى اليومين المقبلين لإرسال رسالة إلى إخواننا العرب والى ممثلي المجتمع الدولي المجتمعين في الرياض تؤكد رفضكم للاحتلال والتزامكم بتقرير المصير" ، قال البيض.
"سلاحنا الوحيد هو تصميمنا على استعادة حقوقنا مهما كان الثمن" ، واضاف : "اننا سوف تنجح في استعادة استقلالنا."
و كانت المظاهرات المؤيدة للاستقلال ، قد تضاعفت في الجنوب في الاشهر الاخيرة وسط تدهور الحالة الاقتصادية والشكاوى المتعلقة بالتمييز لصالح الشماليين من قبل حكومة صنعاء.
الحكومات الغربية كانت تضغط من أجل زيادة حادة في المساعدات الى اليمن لمساعدته على إمتلاك مصادر متعددة للتعمل مع المناوئين.
الشيعة الزيود المتمردون في أقصى الشمال خاضوا سبع سنوات من القتال ضد القوات الحكومية قبل التوصل إلى هدنة هشة دخلت حيز االتنفيذ في 12 فبراير.
اليمن أيضا الموطن الأصلي لأجداد زعيم تنظيم القاعدة اسامة بن لادن ويخشى الغرب من تزايد التشدد الاسلامي فيه.
