Mr. Jamal Benomar,
Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary General on Yemen
Dear sir
On the 17th of May 2013 a brutal murder of two young men from Aden took place in a busy street in Sana’a
These two young men were Mohammed Al Khateeb in his early twenties and Hassan Jaffar Aman in his teens.
There were murdered in a classical and unquestionably cold blood-fashion by a group of tribal men who were allowed to drive in Sana’a with impunity carrying their killing machines as they work for a powerful tribal Sheikh by the name of Ali Abdroobo Al Awadhi. The two murdered young men were town urban-dwellers with no tribal ties and completely peaceful carrying no arms whatsoever.
What happened was that the two young men with a friend of theirs (Hisham Al Qodasi) were travelling in their car along Al- Khamseen Street in Sana’a when they came across a slow moving “wedding procession” for one of the Awadhi tribal sheikh’s kin when they deiced to overtake the procession. On doing so, they were stopped and as Mohamed came out from the car to speak to them , they gunned him down and then came round the other side to kill the immensely frightened teenager as he sat in the car. Hisham was beaten up but is still alive, thank God.
Then the killers drove on, on their merry was to complete their wedding festivities as if nothing has happened > As they drove by from the site of the event , their car trampled Mohamed’s body lying in the street
Now we should point out that Sheikh Awadhi is not only tribal leader but also a senior member of the powerful Islah Party ( an offshoot of the global Moslem brotherhood) which has half of the Ministerial seats in the cabinet. He is paradoxically also a member of the National Dialogue process meant to lead Yemen out of the middle ages to a democratic and civic status
There is also some evidence that the son of this Sheikh is in some way a culprit in these murders
We are writing to you hoping that you will urge the Yemeni President and Government and put pressure to bear on them to let this case go through the full course of law and that the due process is not tainted by corruption as is normally the case.
The people from the South (to which the two victims belong) are boiling with anger and asking for justice to be implemented as soon as possible. We agree with what the English William Pen philosopher said “ Justice delayed is justice denied”
We have already heard from reliable sources that the Sheikh, fully aided and bated by the leaders of the Islah party, are putting pressure on the Attorney –General not to take this case and the police forces to put obstacles on due process.
Unfortunately it appears that this pressure is working at this stage
