Six killed in south Yemen on civil war anniversary

(Reuters) - Four civilians and two soldiers were shot dead and 10 others wounded by security forces in the southern Yemeni port city of Aden Friday, southern separatists and an official said, as crowds gathered calling for the separation of the south.
A local security official said three soldiers including a lieutenant were among those hurt at a festival to mark the anniversary of a violent struggle for an independent south which led to civil war and began in Aden on January 13, 1986.
The crowd at the festival was shouting "Revolution! Revolution! Oh South!," witnesses said.
Sunday, Yemen's cabinet proposed an immunity law to speed President Ali Abdullah Saleh's exit under a Gulf-brokered plan to end months of protests that have paralyzed the impoverished Arab state. Presidential elections are set for February 21.
However, any successor to Saleh faces many challenges: a rebellion in the north, the southern separatist movement and al Qaeda's most active wing, based in Yemen.
Thursday, at least four fighters from a Sunni Salafi Islamist group were killed in fighting with Shi'ite rebel fighters in northern Yemen.
Analysts say Saleh was expected to leave Yemen for medical treatment after parliament approves the immunity bill.

ثورة ثورة يا جنوب نحن جنوبيين "Revolution! Revolution! Oh South!," and "We are southerners.”At least seven Yemeni people have been shot dead after clashes erupted between regime forces and pro-secession protesters in the southern port city of Aden.


Violence erupted on Friday when thousands of demonstrators gathered in the city, calling for the secession of the south and prosecution of outgoing dictator Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Forces loyal to Saleh fired tear gas and live bullets on protesters, killing five civilians and injuring fifteen others.

Two soldiers were killed and three officers were wounded when protesters clashed with the military forces.

The protesters were shouting "Revolution! Revolution! Oh South!," and "We are southerners.”

Aden protesters also called for a boycott of the upcoming presidential elections.

Similar anti-Saleh protests were held in the capital, Sana'a, and 17 other provinces.

Yemenis, who hold Saleh responsible for the killing of hundreds of anti-regime protesters since the beginning of protests in the country last January, say that the immunity granted to must be lifted and he must stand trial for ordering the deadly crackdown on people.

Saleh, who has been in power for 33 years, signed the power transition deal brokered by Persian Gulf Arab states in Saudi Arabia on November 23 and resigned as president in return for amnesty.

Since then, Yemenis have been holding almost daily protests, condemning the US-backed deal and demanding the prosecution of Saleh and his regime officials.

Saleh currently serves as an honorary president until polls are held in February to elect his successor.

5 killed as Yemen police, protesters clash in south




Firefights between police and southern separatists in Yemen on Friday killed five and wounded 23, as protesters nationwide denounced a plan granting the president immunity from prosecution, medics and police said.

"Three protesters were killed and 18 others were wounded," a medical official in the main southern port of Aden said of the southern separatists.

"Two policemen were killed and five others were wounded," said another medic from a government hospital in the city. The official named one of the dead as Major Walid Saleh Ali, whom police had earlier said was among two policemen wounded.
Witnesses said police used tear gas and live rounds against thousands of demonstrators in Aden's Khor Maksar district.
The protesters were calling for secession and to reject a Gulf-brokered plan that grants President Ali Abdullah Saleh immunity from prosecution when he steps down.
Gunmen among the protesters returned fire, the same sources said.
Witnesses said protesters were still battling the police today for control of Al-Arud Square where the gathering took place. Police said they intervened because of the "sensitivity of the ".
The square is close to consulates, UN offices and security headquarters.
"We allowed them to gather at the beginning but later they began to spread so we had to intervene," a police official told AFP.
The Southern Movement protesters called for separation, marking the anniversary of clashes on January 13, 1986 between factions of the Yemeni Socialist Party that ruled south Yemen, an independent state at the time.
"The Southern Movement is boycotting the upcoming presidential elections across all southern provinces," read their banners. "The Gulf Initiative does not concern us."
Based on the Gulf plan, Saleh will remain honourary president until February 21 when Vice President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi will officially replace him.
"The southerners affirm that they reject the elections and the Gulf initiative and hold on to their demand for the secession of the south," said Khaled Awadh, a Southern Movement activist and one of the organisers.
Meanwhile, tens of thousands of people protested in Sanaa and 17 other provinces calling for Yemeni unity and rejecting the Saleh immunity deal.
