GCC CUP THREAT
Posted on » Wednesday, November 17, 2010

DUBAI: South-ern activists have vowed to disrupt the Gulf Cup football tournament being staged from next week in south Yemen, in which Bahrain's team is playing.

The Southern Movement urged its supporters to cut off roads leading to the match cities, including Aden, for demonstrators to take to the streets and for a general strike.

Aden's security chief General Qiran Abdullah said at the end of October that "all necessary measures ... to ensure security" during the Gulf Cup have been taken.

On October 11, a bomb attack on a club in Aden killed three people.

The attack, for which no-one claimed responsibility, raised doubts about Yemen's ability to stage the Gulf Cup tournament from Monday to December 5.

The matches pit Yemen against the GCC states as well as Iraq.

In addition to a growing Al Qaeda threat and the southern separatist movement, Yemen faces a sporadic revolt by Zaidi Shi'ites in the north
