Five Yemenis were wounded on Thursday during clashes between police and protesters demanding the release of a southern opposition figure, witnesses and a medical source said.
Three Yemeni soldiers and two protesters went into clashes when thousands of people marched in towns and cities in south Yemen, appealing for the release of Hassan Baoum, who heads the supreme council of the Southern Movement, whose members want either independence or increased autonomy for the south.
The main march was in Daleh, where Baoum was arrested along with several others, including one of his sons, on Tuesday evening. Protesters there carried the former flag of south Yemen, which was independent until 1990.
Demonstrators attempted to cut the main road from Sanaa to Aden, the main city in the south. That sparked a gunfight with soldiers that ended in the injuries, according to a medical source.
